Today, a majority of clergy and faith leaders revealed that inadequate salaries, lack of housing or housing allowances, minimal insurance coverage, under-funded pension plans, and the rising cost of student-loan debt created stress, which diverted clergy energy from ministry. Based on the results of these studies in November of 2012, Memphis Theological Seminary (MTS) was one of 20 schools invited by the Lilly Endowment to share in a $12.3 Million Pilot Program to address the economic challenges facing future ministers.
MTS launched its pilot program Financial Leadership for Ministry (FLM) in January of 2014, FLM is a program dedicated to equipping, empowering, and engaging faith leaders to practice financial excellence.
WHY WE NEED FLM
The cost of all higher education has outpaced inflation for the past 30 years, FLM provides a plethora of resources and expertise to address some of the gaps and strains that many encounter. Our desire is to help our constituents understand the intersectionality of theology and practical application when it comes to financial literacy and stewardship.
Because we are housed at Memphis Theological Seminary, it gives us the advantage to help make sure that our students have access to the education, training and resources needed for personal and professional stewardship.
OUR GOALS
- To promote financial literacy
- To decrease current and future debt
- To provide a biblical and theological resource bank for current students, alumni and those within the faith community
- To engage and educate key stakeholders about the challenges facing current and future ministers
WHAT WE DO
WITHIN OUR SEMINARY
FLM provides free one on one financial counseling for every seminary student. We believe that it is important to help students map out their financial plan and help them raft how they will pay for seminary. We also offer courses geared towards financial literacy and leadership.
WITHIN OUR COMMUNITY
FLM provides creative and innovative ways of engaging in dialogue and meaningful conversations around ministry and money. We host special seminars and workshops to meet the specific needs of our clergy and lay constituents.
